Let’s face it—moving is never fun. Whether you’re buying or selling, it’s almost always a stressful journey.

With that in mind, I’ve brought in moving expert Jameson Olsen to offer some advice on how to coordinate and schedule your move so that it goes off without a hitch.

According to her, the most important rule to follow is never book your moving company over the phone. This can lead to trouble because when you book over the phone, moving companies are by law only permitted to give you the minimum time frame. In this scenario, you’ll typically hear them tell you something like: “There’s a two-hour labor minimum, a one-hour travel time, a 12% fuel surcharge.”

Basically, the charges are broken down, but nothing is added up. Their response technically equates to three hours, but it rarely goes that quickly.

When you call a moving company, what you should do instead is set up an estimator appointment so someone can physically come out to your home, survey it, and give you an accurate price and time frame for your move. You’ll want to call at least a month in advance and then generally make a booking decision within the next week. It doesn’t matter whether you have a closing date because moving dates are flexible; but, the longer you wait to make a booking, the more it will cost you.

The longer you wait to make a booking, the more it will cost you.

Past figuring out which moving company to go with, there are a couple other tips you can use to streamline your moving process.

If you’re doing a long-distance move, label all of your boxes on every side whether they’re fragile or not. Also, number your boxes and keep a log of what’s inside them. This will make it easier to keep track of everything.

If you’re doing a local move, color-coordinate your boxes with the rooms they’re supposed to go in. This will make the move go much faster because your movers will know what to do with them without stopping to ask you for directions every couple of minutes.
